Extreme skiing is not the sport for those unskilled and fainthearted. According to Chris
Landry “If you fall, you die.” This unconventional and relatively new sport involves skiing
down mountains which are steeper than ordinary skiing slopes. The pitch of an average ski
slope, even on the expert runs, is no more than 20-30 degrees. Extreme skiers, on the other
hand, go down slopes pitched at about 50-60 degrees, so that on the steepest runs, the skiers’
elbows graze the snow on the uphill side. As one skier describes it, "Extreme skiing is
something like skiing down the side of a building."
Since there are no handy skiing lifts to take extreme skiers to the top of the mountains,
they must depend upon their mountain-climbing skills to get to the position for their daring
downhill runs. Often the preparatory climb is the most dangerous part of the trip- some skiers
have lost their lives on the way up the mountains. Extreme skiing demands the utmost skilled
and controlled skills. One mistake can be fatal- it is all or nothing to the extreme skiers. They
must be prepared to hurl themselves off the cliffs which sharply drop away. It is
psychologically very difficult to drop those first few frightening yards.
The extreme skiers must be alert and be able to cope with the unknown hazards which
certainly lie ahead. One danger is the possibility of an avalanche. On warm and sunny days, the
