UNIT 4: Learning a foreign language
LESSON5: Write
I. Objectives: After the lesson students will be able to:
Write a letter of inquiry to the institution requesting for more information about the
course and fees.
II. Language content
Vocabulary: request, detail, look forward to, express, exactly, edition ..
Grammar: The simple present and a letter of inquiry.
III. Method:

V.Procedures:
1. Warm up (6 minutes)
Teacher Students
- Give the game of Jumbled words - Play the game in 2 teams.
+ VRESETIMADNET= advertisement
+ SWNE = news
+ ERSTETNI = interest
+ ATMORFIOINN= information
+ EEF = fee
2. Pre writing (12 minutes)
- Ask some questions:
+ Do you want to take the course in foreign
language council?
+ Do you know this center well?
- Pre teach new words
3. While writing (17 minutes)
- Ask Ss to look at the poster of the letter in
Ss book (p. 37)
- Ask Ss to work in pairs, read the letter and
answer the questions.
a. Where did John Robinson see the schools
advertisement?
b. What language does he want to learn?
c. What aspect of Vietnamese does he want
to improve?
d. What does Robinson want to know?
? How many parts of a letter of inquiry are
there?
? What are they? Work in pairs and share
with partners
- Divide the letter into 4 parts and match each
paragraph with a suitable headline:
a. Introduction
b. Request
c. Further information
d. Conclusion
- Read the three advertisements on p36;
choose one of the schools you want to attend
to improve your subject.
- After finishing, compare with partners,
- Make some correction
- Read Ss letters and correct the mistakes.
II. Writing
1. Reading comprehension
- Look at the poster.
Dear sir,
I saw the advertisement for a news English
course at your institution on todays TV programs.
Im interested in taking this course and would be
grateful. Would you give me some more
information about the course?
I started to learn English 4 months ago. I can
speak a little English. However I read it very slowly
and I cant write very well. English grammar is
difficult for me so I want to improve my grammar
and writing skill as well.
Could you please provide me with more
information about the length of the course and fees
for beginners? I can supply my record of English
study if necessary.

4. Post writing (7 minutes)
- Suppose that you want to attend an English
summer course. You need the following
information. Please rewrite the sentences

V.Procedures:
1. Warm up (6 minutes)

- Have Ss play the game Information
transmitting
- Choose 6 Ss from 2 teams, they stand in 2
lines. The first student in each line receives a
sentence from the teacher. Then he / she
whispers the sentence to the second and so
on. The last student shouts out the sentence,
and if it is right, that team wins the game.
Two sentences :
+ I want to improve my writing skill.
+ English is an interesting language.
- Play game in two teams of 6 Ss.
2. Pre listening (7 minutes)
- Set a situation: Today you will listen to a
conversation between Lan and Kate. Lan is
talking to Kate about her studying English.
- Listen to the teacher.
