A great emphasis has been placed on English as a foreign language instruction at Hanoi University of Business and Technology. However, the current syllabus for first-year Architecture majors has not yielded the teachers’ desired results and has proved inadequate in addressing the students’ needs. This study, thus, aims to investigate the needs of the first-year students of Architecture, as well as the attitudes and expectations of their ESP teachers in ESP reading instruction, which will serve as the foundation for designing an appropriate ESP reading syllabus. An analysis of needs was carried out based on Hutchinson & Water’s (1987) framework, with the means of questionnaire and interview to gather information from four sources: Architecture professionals, ESP teachers, and first-year and third-year Architecture majors at HUBT. Resourceful information was revealed about the perceptions of architects, HUBT ESP teachers and students on ESP reading learning and teaching. The findings indicated a need to introduce an ESP reading syllabus for first-year Architecture majors. Such key aspects as the students’ expectations, preferences and English competence, ESP teachers’ expectations and suggestions, were taken into account in the syllabus design. Based on the literature review and the research findings, an ESP reading syllabus is proposed, with focus on training basic reading skills and using texts related to the architectural domain. This syllabus will expectedly improve the ESP reading learning and teaching situation at HUBT and make it more responsive to the first-year Architecture students’ desires, and the ESP teachers’ expectations in line with the university training goals and the labor market’s demands.
